How safe is it to take Wysolone during early pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have primary hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. I take thyroxine tablets, so TSH is within range now. I am four weeks pregnant. Upon consulting with Gynecologist, the doctor told me to take Wysolone 2.5 mg tablets. Is it safe to consume it since I already had a miscarriage last year?

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

First of all, congratulations on getting a chance to enjoy the pregnancy period again. So, you need to understand that during pregnancy, TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) should be around 2.5 mIU/mL. If it is not, we need to increase the dose. So, please mention the exact value and the dosage you are taking. Then, Prednisolone is not contraindicated in pregnancy, but we should know why she wants to give it to you.

Do you have an autoimmune disease? Steroids are not required for Hashimoto's thyroiditis. So, kindly go to your doctor and, with all due respect, ask her why we are taking Prednisolone. I am sure a doctor has given you that, so she must have some reasons behind it. So, meet her, discuss, and write back to me.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.
