Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have been dealing with a heavy case of GERD due to stress. I tried medications OTC, however, as I tried to ween off the medication, my body created a resistance towards them and started causing me heartburn. I stopped taking them and have not been taking anything for four weeks, however, I am unable to eat much. My stomach gets a bit hot and when I eat to ease it, I end up with a lump in my throat due to acid reflux. Now I am able to eat a slight bit more but now I tend to get a pain where the esophagus and stomach connect. I am obese though I have been working on my weight. The only appointment I have been able to get is for the 4th of next month. I am worried that I may have an ulcer or bacteria messing with my gut this entire time. Is this something that cannot wait until then or is there something I can take to ease the symptoms until my appointment?
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
You are right, the GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) with the possibility of some ulcer at the gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) the junction where esophagus combines to stomach. But again, it is not necessary, because the acid itself can bring pain in the lower esophagus or can cause ulcers with the stomach.
I suggest you to take Prilosec (Omeprazole) or Pepcid (Famotidine) which one is available to you. If not available, then you can purchase some more strong acid suppressant medication OTC (over the counter) i.e. capsule Esomeprazole 40 mg (proton pump inhibitor) half an hour before breakfast or meals, exactly the same way as Prilosec. It does not seem serious to me, you can wait until then, but do start the medications now. Otherwise, it would be causing you trouble until then.
