Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am an 18-year-old male, 5 feet 3.5 inches tall. My mom is 5 feet 3 inches, and my dad is 5 feet 11 inches. I am concerned about my height and do not understand why I am relatively short. My dad often mentions that he experienced a growth spurt during the summer of his 16th year (sophomore year). I have maintained a healthy lifestyle by sleeping well and exercising regularly. Also, when I turned 13, I lost about 40 pounds. Despite these efforts, I still worry about my height and wonder how tall I might eventually become. Is there anything else I can do to support my growth? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

I want to reassure you that your growth is following a normal trajectory despite possibly having a slightly lower percentile due to your previous weight loss. Based on your parents' heights, I have calculated your mid-parental height, which serves as an estimate of your expected height. Your mid-parental height is 5 feet 4 inches, so you align with these expectations. To further support your growth I suggest you maintain a balanced diet and prioritize proper sleep and regular exercise. Activities like playing basketball and cycling can be particularly beneficial.

I hope this helps.
