Is Hb level of 22 normal in newborn?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

This is regarding my friend's daughter. The baby is seven days old. Initially, we were told that the baby had jaundice. She was on phototherapy for two days and was declared normal. Now, her hemoglobin level is 22 g/dL. Her father's Hb level is 17 g/dL.

  1. Is a hemoglobin level of 22 g/dL normal in a newborn?
  2. We are advised now to go for drips due to a high Hb level. Is that a correct treatment?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

1. Yes, a hemoglobin of 22 g/dL is definitely on the higher side. It can cause complications like hypoglycemia and sluggish blood flow to vital organs.

2. A partial exchange transfusion is required, in which a small amount of blood will be withdrawn from the baby and will be replaced with fluid (saline). So, please go ahead with the procedure.

I hope it helps.

Thank you.
