Can herpes simplex virus infect upper respiratory tract?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had protected sex with a sex worker four days back. I have sore throat and white spots in the back of my throat since then. Should I be concerned?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The chances of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) transmission in single protected intercourse is nil. But the STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) like the herpes simplex virus can be spread by skin-to-skin contact, kissing, and sex with the infected person. It affects the respiratory tract. Consult your doctor for examination.
