Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My wife has recently told me that she has HIV for the past 15 years. So I went to the clinic to get tested and the result was negative. My question is how is it possible that I test negative after six years of unprotected sex? Is this test 100 % accurate or should I go for a different type of test?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Besides unprotected sexual intercourse, HIV transmission depends on various factors which include the type of sexual intercourse whether anal, vaginal, or oral sex, HIV load of the person, whether taking antiretrovirals or not, adherence to drugs, whether having an advanced disease or not, other coinfections or opportunistic infections in the source. The test kits used these days are highly sensitive and specific and give accurate results. You can rely on the result. It is good that your first test is giving a negative test result. I suggest you to repeat the test at three and six months after the last unprotected exposure. Use precautions in the future (consistent and corrective use of condoms).

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
