Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am currently dating a girl and just found out she has HIV. I want to stay with her and have a future together. What can she do right now to increase her chances of survival, and what can I do to limit my chances of contamination? Any tablet a day you can prescribe?

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

For your partner, I recommend she should be investigated first for HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) viral load and absolute CD4 count. Besides these investigations, I will also recommend her routine hemogram, biochemistry, Chest X-ray, HBV (hepatitis B virus), and HCV (hepatitis C virus). Her viral load will likely be suppressed if she has already undertaken these tests and receives antiretrovirals (ARV) regularly. ARV is an excellent treatment for HIV which, when taken regularly by a person, not only keeps HIV suppressed but also significantly improves CD4 counts (immune cells). If a person takes these medicines regularly, it not only improves the survival and quality of life but also prevents transmission to an uninfected partner. I will recommend you get your HIV rapid test now. If it is negative, a repeat test three months after the last exposure. If your HIV status is negative, pre-exposure prophylaxis can be prescribed to you after specific investigations of yours at a Government based antiretroviral treatment center or by a private practitioner. These medicines are unavailable over the counter and require a signed prescription. I will advise you to consistently and correctly use condoms during sex, which not only gives protection from HIV but also from other sexually transmitted infections.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
