Can antibiotics, along with sunscreen and moisturizer, help alleviate hormonal acne?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 26-year-old female. For the past three months, I have been experiencing nodules-like acne forming on my jawline, cheeks, and forehead. They are painful when touched, and some of them are itchy (but not all). Sometimes pustules also develop, and they leave dark spots on my face. Can you please help?

Normally, my skin is of the combination type, and I rarely have acne unless I am under stress. However, whenever I have acne, they always leave dark spots for a long time. These days, I continuously develop pustules and nodules type acne on my face. It does not seem like a breakout, but rather a single nodule forming, and then new acne would appear almost every week, sometimes even every day. Some are itchy, while others are very painful.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. Your history and photos (attachments removed to protect patient's identity) suggest hormonal acne, but I will require a detailed history to confirm the diagnosis so that I can suggest proper treatment accordingly. Do you get your periods regularly? Is there any history of thyroid disease in your family or do you have one? Have you experienced any hormonal imbalances? Are you married?

Please revert back with answers.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor for the reply,

Yes, my periods are regular. My mother has goiter. From my side, I am not sure if I have any hormonal imbalances or not, and I am not married.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I suggest you take the following medicines: Tablet Minocycline one tablet daily at night for 10 days, a combination of Clindamycin and Benzoyl peroxide gel, apply a small quantity daily at night for 15 days on the face, and a skin moisturizer, apply on the face in the morning. Please follow up in 10 days. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicines with their consent.

Thank you.

I hope your queries are resolved and any further queries are welcome.
