Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was involved in unprotected intercourse last month. Within 13 hours, I took an emergency contraceptive pill (I-pill) which I had taken two months before also. The other month there was one day delay in the periods. I was bleeding brown blood, and the bleeding became scanty for the next day evening. Scanty bleeding continued on and off for two more days, and then it stopped. I have developed slight lower back uneasiness and no other symptoms of illness. Upon HPT testing, the result came out negative. Please help me know when can a blood test be done to detect pregnancy with accurate results.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your first query consult is on us!

Stress or hormonal imbalance can lead to variation in the menstrual cycle. There are fewer chances of pregnancy as a home pregnancy test (HPT) is negative and, you are 10 days overdue.

The following blood test could be done to confirm pregnancy:

  1. Serum B hCG (beta human chorionic gonadotropin) test.

The result will be positive, if you are pregnant within 14 days. You can get done with a blood test as you are 10 days overdue already.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Can you please explain to me the meaning of 10 days overdue?

Hello,

Glad to have you back!

I am here to help you get the best medical advice.

10 days overdue means that your menstrual cycle were expected 10 days back.

You can get your pregnancy test done tomorrow.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your answer.

Hello,

Can I know if you have got your blood test done for pregnancy? I also want to know if you have got your regular menstrual cycle.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello Doctor,

Thank you for asking me regarding the follow-up.

After a week, I got my beta hCG test done and also repeated the test after a month as there was a delay of six days for my periods in that month. Both the test results showed a beta hCG value of 2 mIU. Two days after the blood test, I got my period which lasted for two days. I have not been involved in intercourse activity for two months from the time the variations in my periods occurred. I also did HPT many times which were all negative. Do you think I could rule out pregnancy at this point? Please help me.

Thank you doctor.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I am here to help you get the best medical advice.

There is no need of repeating the pregnancy test if there is proper bleeding during the menstrual cycle.

I suggest you avoid frequent usage of the tablet I-pill (Levonorgestrel) as it is unsafe.

Instead, temporary contraception can be used.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
