How to manage hyperacusis during dental procedures?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I suffer from hyperacusis and need to have dental work done. I am terrified that the sensitivity will worsen. I keep reading conflicting opinions on whether to wear earplugs or earmuffs.

Even with IV sedation, my ears are still exposed to the noise from the drill. I do not know what to do.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Dental work will not increase hyperacusis, but it may cause radiating pain in the ears. Earplugs or earmuffs may not help and could even worsen the symptoms. Did you undergo any hearing tests before receiving IV (intravenous) sedation?

Looking forward to your response in order to help you.

Thank you.
