I have hypercholesterolemia in a very young age. Is it curable?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 19-year-old female. I have had a history of hypercholesterolemia for the last six years. I have been following a proper diet, daily physical exercise, and a lot of Ayurvedic tactics. I have done everything for this, but still, my condition is not improving. My cholesterol levels are still at their worst, and my LDL levels range around 170 mg/dL, HDL levels range about 42 mg/dL, triglycerides are above 190 mg/dL, and total cholesterol is around 250 mg/dL. My parents have an average lipid profile. No one has high cholesterol in my family. I have a family history of diabetes, but my parents have normal blood sugar levels. Earlier, I took the tablet Rosuvastatin for cholesterol, but now I am not taking them from last year. What should I do to improve my health?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Hypercholesterolemia in this age can be due to familial causes. But, as you mentioned, there is no family history, so chances of being familial are low. I would advise continuing with diet, exercise, avoidance of junk food, smoking, etc. I suggest you take statins like Rosuvastatin as you used to. Also, I suggest you take Fenofibrate 145 mg once daily. It will help with the triglycerides. Taking low-dose medications for a disease not controlled on diet and exercise is not a bad idea. Do not worry, and you will be fine. You just need some lifestyle changes.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
