Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had an abdominal hysterectomy two months ago, and a couple of days ago, I went to the hospital for abdominal pain, and they observed me overnight. They said I most likely had a partial bowel obstruction, so is it normal to have these symptoms after abdominal surgery? And what kind of precautions should I take in the future, so it does not happen again?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Formation of adhesion is a common adverse effect of surgery. During the surgery, decreasing the risk of forming adhesions includes:

  1. Shortening surgical time.
  2. Keeping the tissues moist.
  3. Gently handling any tissues or organs.
  4. Using starch–free and latex-free gloves.

As a patient, you can choose minimally invasive procedures, earlier surgery, and take a liquid diet for a day once you start experiencing any abdominal bloating or cramping.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
