Why am I more active on a sleep-deprived day than on a well-rested one?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have problems with insomnia and can stay up until 3 am. I can commit and pull all night, then sleep the following night. The thing is, I play competitive video games for a living, and I had noticed I play much better the day that I am sleep deprived as opposed to the previous day when I was rested. So why could this be that I play better when I have been up for 30 hours than otherwise? I want to know because I would like to perform the same during my rested time and not force myself to stay up all night to get a competitive edge. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern. It is due to sleep deprived increased alertness. When you are sleep deprived, it affects your neurons which increases alertness. Because of alertness, your concentration and reflexes are increased. But if you keep doing it for longer, it will start damaging your brain neurons.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
