Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I need help with resolving chicken skin or KP. I have it on my cheeks, and they look really bad. I have been using CeraVe, which helps with the bumps but not the redness. I have had this issue all my life.

Kindly advise on what I should do.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

As per the history provided, keratosis pilaris on cheeks appears due to the thickening and accumulation of dead cells around the follicular areas where facial hair erupts. They may be present on and off and usually reduce in appearance with the help of keratolytic agents, which help reduce the thickness of the bumps formed on the affected area. They appear due to multiple factors, including genetic susceptibility, climate changes, dietary factors, hormonal factors, repeated shaving or trauma, and recurrent folliculitis after the inflammation has subsided. So, I suggest you to follow the instructions mentioned below,

1. Use Ahaglow S foaming face wash (Salicylic Acid 2 %, Aloe extract 5 % and Glycolic Acid 1 %) twice daily. Apply, massage in gentle circular motions, and wash off within one minute.

2. Use Peroclin 2.5 % gel (Clindamycin and Benzoyl Peroxide). Apply on the affected area as a spot treatment in the morning for three weeks or till the appearance decreases.

3. Use Hydrocortisone cream (steroid) 1 %, and apply on the affected areas in a very thin layer using the smallest quantity possible at night for two weeks. They help reduce the thickness and textural repair on the affected area.

4. Take tablet Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C) 500 mg. It is a chewable tablet, and take it once daily after food for one month. They help the lesions heal faster.

5. Avoid oily and fried food, red meat, milk, dairy products, and sweets. Consume lots of fruits, vegetables, fiber-rich food, and at least 12 glasses of water a day. These dietary changes would help prevent and reduce the lesions' recurrence.

6. Glycolic acid chemical peels can be considered. They are done in six sessions every two weeks to one month, which is helpful for skin rejuvenation. These procedures can be done by consulting a dermatologist. They may be helpful in preventing recurrence as well.

7. Take capsule Omega-3 (nutritional supplement) once daily after food at night for one month. They help in hydration and prevent KP's (keratosis pilaris) appearance.

8. Use CeraVe SA (gentle skin exfoliator) smoothening face cream. It can be used twice daily, 20 minutes after application of the medications mentioned above, to provide moisturization and soften the lesions.

Kindly consult a specialist, talk with them and take the medications with their consent.

KP may appear on and off throughout life, and the aim of managing them is by using products like moisturizers and face washes to reduce their thickness, thereby softening them.

I would also request you to provide an image of the affected area for further assessment of severity and management.

I hope I could be of help and hope the above details were informative.

Kindly follow up for further queries.

Take care.
