Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My daughter is 2-years-old. She has a mass on her cheek, it was small a few months ago, but it is getting bigger now. Kindly help.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
It could be a lipoma (fat mass). The treatment is surgical excision of the mass, and a surgical opinion is needed. Kindly answer me the following. Is the mass painful? Any history of injury? When did it appear? Does she have a fever? Revert with the answers. Regards.
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Thanks for the reply. It was a small red pimple a few months back. She has no fever. But there is an enlarged lymph node close to it in the neck. Please help.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
The neck mass in your daughter is the cervical lymphadenopathy from an infection. By far the most common neck mass in children. The etiology may be either viral or bacterial, and an upper respiratory infection is often the cause. Infected lymph node are tender or painful on physical examination. If infection or abscess is not present, management is observation to ensure resolution of the adenopathy. Surgical opinion should be taken. Differential diagnosis are cervical lymphadenopathy, congenital neck masses (brachial cleft cyst), lymphangiomas, hemangiomas, dermoid cyst, thymic cyst. Usual treatment is observation. CT (computed tomography) or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) should be obtained to assess the extent of lesion. Regards.
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Thank you for the response. The lymph node enlargement is close to her cheek, which is on her lower neck. The mass is dark in color and visible, and if I hold it between my finger, it feels like something dry and rectangular. It started as a red pimple a few months back with a small mass, and now it is dark, and the mass has significantly increased in size. Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
The cheek mass could be a cyst or fat mass. Proper clinical examination and palpation of the lesion to feel the consistency, whether soft, firm, hard, or nodulocystic, is required to arrive at a definitive diagnosis. Apply Physiogel Hypoallergenic (Aqua, Capric triglyceride, Glycerine, Pentylene glycol, Cocos nucifera oil, Elaeis guineensis oil, Butyrospermum parkii butter, Olea europaea fruit oil, Hydrogenated lecithin, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Caprylyl glycol, Xanthum gum, Squalane, Carbomer, Sodium carbomer, Ceramide) two to three times daily for one month if dry skin. I suggest taking a pediatric opinion and surgical opinion as it is swelling. Excision of the lesion may be needed if it is causing pain or is increasing in size, or is of cosmetic concern. Till then, observation is needed. Regards.
