What could be the reason for the red, painful and swollen lump on my skin?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am attaching a picture of a lump on my skin, and I wanted to know if this was a swollen lymph node or a pimple. It feels like a hard lump somehow in the skin, not underneath it. It appears to be red, and it is painful.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. From the picture attached (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity), it is an abscess (collection of pus) inside the skin. There are no swollen lymph nodes, so do not worry about it. It will be alright. Can you please tell me when was the first time you noticed it? Have you taken any medicine for it? Are you allergic to any antibiotics? Please let me know so I can help you accordingly.

Thank you

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks a lot for your time and response. I have attached another clear image of the lump, to be certain. I noticed it yesterday; since then, I have been poking it, and it has gotten bigger. I have not taken any medicine for it, and I do not want to take any medication if it can resolve on its own.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It will resolve on its own. Avoid poking it as it will cause more infection. So please do not touch it. You can apply ice to it twice daily. Do not touch with unwashed hands. Let it be; it will go in two to three days. If not, then I can prescribe you medications.

Thank you.
