I am a 44-year-old man, and I have been struggling with ongoing anger issues that are impacting both my personal and professional relationships. Unfortunately, I find myself frequently getting upset, especially with my wife and daughter, even for minor issues where they are not at fault. I have noticed that my work demands keep me glued to my laptop during the day, and in my free time, I tend to prioritize watching finance videos on my mobile rather than spending quality time with my family. I am concerned about the toll this is taking on my relationships. Can you provide guidance on how to manage my anger and improve my work-life balance to foster better connections with my loved ones?

Thank you for taking help from a psychiatrist. Your anger issue is due to the stress related to your work. You may have a major depressive disorder due to a stressful life. There is non-pharmacological management to deal with depression. I suggest you follow the below-mentioned guidelines as it will help you:

  1. You should exercise daily for 30 to 45 minutes like at least going for a walk.

  2. You should do meditation for 20 minutes daily. Just sit in one place in a comfortable position and try to concentrate on your normal breathing. Do not stop or force yourself to stop your thoughts. Just let it be.

  3. You should eat healthy home-cooked foods and avoid junk foods.

  4. You must drink enough water.

  5. You should spend quality time with friends and family members daily. Limit the use of social media.

  6. You should spend time doing creative hobbies like reading good books, writing journals, painting, drawing, and learning new skills or language or musical instruments.

  7. You should sleep for seven to eight hours daily.

  8. You must avoid tobacco usage, alcohol consumption, or any type of substance abuse.

    Live your life. Do not just spend it. Be bold and confident. You should give time to work but work is not life. You are always replaceable at your work but not at your home. You must take a break from your routine life. Go on a vacation with your family. Make memorable periods in your life to enjoy your retirement. If you still have symptoms that persist after following the above-mentioned advice for four to six weeks, then you need to start taking medications for a short duration.
