How to effectively manage seasonal allergic rhinitis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am experiencing a bad cold or strep throat, along with itchy eyes and throat, but no cough. I do not have tonsils, but there seems to be a whitish puffiness on one side of my throat. It started five days ago and has been getting slightly worse since then. I have been consuming plenty of fruits, vegetables, preventative vitamins, raw garlic, and even tried a saline sinus rinse. I recently moved to a very dry area, but I am used to a more humid climate. I have never had hay fever, sinus issues, or been affected by pollen before. Am I sick, or is this a severe reaction to the blanket of green pine pollen all over town? Can pine tree pollen cause a swollen throat, earache, and headache on just one side of my face?

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

As you mentioned, the symptoms began only after exposure to pine pollen, and it is most likely that you are experiencing seasonal allergic rhinitis. This condition typically presents with symptoms similar to yours. The best approach is to avoid exposure to pollen as much as possible.

For symptomatic relief, you can take a combination of Montelukast and Levocetirizine, one tablet at night for 10 days. If your stuffy or runny nose persists, you may also try using Fluticasone nasal spray twice daily in each nostril. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicines with take the medicines with their consent.

The home treatments you have tried only provide temporary relief and will not help in the long term. So, it is best to start these medications as soon as possible and continue to avoid further pollen exposure. Keeping your home environment warm will also help soothe your symptoms and reduce discomfort.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
