Why does my sister have mental breakdowns only during periods?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My sister has had symptoms of a nervous breakdown. She had her womb removed. She also had liver issues and had been prescribed too much serotonin and contraceptives which badly hurt her liver. Every time she comes up to her time of period (although the womb is gone), she gets mentally unstable and very low mood. Sometimes she has dark thoughts that she cannot see the next day. She does not want to live, and she is in tears. She is doing fine for the rest of the month but could be better. She has had endless tests, but none result in actual actions.

Please offer some advice.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The condition looks serious as it is not just moderate depression, but suicidal tendencies are present. However, there are not many tests needed. She does not have a uterus, but probably in her brain, she still thinks it is the time of her periods and hence gets the psychosomatic symptoms. Therefore, she only needs a psychiatrist and a psychotherapist. No other tests or doctors are required. With mental training and medicines, she will overcome her depression.

I wish the best for her.

Thank you.
