Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have a raised mole on my right armpit that I have had my entire life. Currently, I am pregnant with six weeks left. Less than a week ago, I noticed that the mole started hurting. Not only has its shape completely changed, but it has also doubled in size and changed color from brown to a pinkish hue with dark spots. As of today, the mole has turned entirely black. The swelling has gone down, but it remains pure black. The skin underneath the mole is red and extends about half an inch into the surrounding area. Can I pull this mole off? Could this be melanoma?
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have noted your history and concerns.
What you are currently experiencing is an increase in the size and inflammation of a nevus or mole. The reason for this is pregnancy. As you may be aware, hormonal changes during pregnancy, especially near-term, can affect the skin in various ways, including changes in the appearance of moles.
Rest assured, the issue will most likely subside after you deliver. However, there may be some element of infection contributing to the swelling. To manage this, apply Mupirocin ointment twice a day, as it is effective in most cases. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicines with their consent. There is no immediate cause for concern, and an investigation to determine the nature of the mole can be considered at a later date.
Please do not attempt to remove the lesion yourself, as this could be risky.
I hope this helps you.
Thank you.
