Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease last year. My liver enzymes are very high. I used to drink champagne, wine, and other hard liquor, a few times a week. But now, I switched to light beer. Is it bad for my liver?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

  • Excessive alcohol, that is, more than 12 g a day, is certainly dangerous and should be strictly avoided.
  • Regarding mild to moderate consumption, data is inadequate at this moment. But, recommendations are to strictly avoid all alcohol consumption because it can damage your already damaged liver cells and may progress to cirrhosis. So, you better avoid it.
  • You must have been advised regarding weight loss, which is of utmost importance for the treatment of this condition. A low-calorie diet and regular exercises will help.

Hope this helps you, and get back if you have any doubts.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I have lost 20 lbs, and I have been eating healthy. Is light beer more healthy than the other liquors?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

  • Yes, if you want to consume, then certainly light beer is healthier than other liquors.
  • Continue weight loss, and your BMI (body mass index) should be at least below 28, as it is associated with lower risk of progression.
