Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

When is it safe to have sex without getting pregnant?

Answered by Dr. Uzma Arqam

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It is easier to tell a safe period of having sex in a regular cycle than in an irregular cycle. Having sex outside the fertile period is less susceptible to pregnancy or conception. In 28 days normal cycle, eight to thirteen is the most likely fertile period, so it is better in a wide range of days to avoid sex. You can use condoms the easiest, but sometimes risky as they can burst. Contraceptives are also used more frequently for preventing conception. Hormonal contraceptive pills like combined oral contraceptive pills and progesterone only can be taken. Implants also have been used on a long-term basis inserted in muscles in the arm and releasing hormones, injectable Medroxyprogesterone (medroxyprogesterone acetate, calcium stearate, corn starch, lactose, mineral oil, sorbic acid, sucrose, and talc) is used for three months of protection, and an intrauterine device like copper Intrauterine device and hormonal intrauterine devices. Hormonal contraceptives have side effects and contraindications that need to be discussed in detail with the patient and to be advised as per her medical risks and her previous and present history. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with them and take medications with their consent. I hope I have cleared all your doubts.

Thank you.
