Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have had a compressed nerve in the fibula head for almost 2 years following an operation to lengthen my right leg. The pain was only on and off seemingly after a certain activity. Over time, I could increase the activity level before getting the same symptoms, but then stop improving. My symptoms were paresthesia like zapping and pricking pain. Nerve conduction studies shows my nerve was perfect. I then underwent decompression surgery five weeks ago. After that we expected the symptoms to go as the nerve was now decompressed. The symptoms are still the same after exercise and as before it last for a while each time before settling. The doctor here says that it could take up to six months to heal. But, the fact is that it is now decompressed and it should not cause compression symptoms as the nerve is apparently otherwise healthy. Your opinion would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your question. The possible reason for persistent symptoms is there has been a longstanding compression on your nerves. So, the nerve would have been damaged subtly. It may not be that extensive damage, which would be demonstrated in the NCV study (nerve conduction velocity). It must be a minimal damage, which precipitates the dysfunction only after exertion. The only other possibility might be the pressure on nerve at any other site other than the already decompressed site, but this is less common. I would agree with your doctor that in the long run it should improve. My advice would be to wait for improvement to show up.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
