Do birth control medication treat PCOS/PMOS?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have abnormally high levels of testosterone. I have been diagnosed with PCOS/PMOS, and as I was growing up, I had precocious puberty, both of which seem to have testosterone as the underlying cause and issue.

I have been interested in FTM hormone therapy and surgeries, and was curious about what kind of situation this put me in since I already have high levels of testosterone.

Will I be able to block the estrogen to allow the testosterone to dominate, or what else would I have to do? Also, I am on birth control medications for PCOS/PMOS.

Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

From what you mentioned in the query, it seems that you have PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome)/PMOS (polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome), and you want to know what treatment options you have.

Well, for once, your oral contraceptive therapy is the first treatment of choice, which you are already taking, and the second is exercising and losing weight, and tablet Metformin (Cellulose acetate and Polyethylene glycols) 500mg thrice a day.

Other androgen-blocking agents are used when, in the later part of your life, fertility is desired for conception, which is not currently the issue. Till that time, it is perfectly alright to continue with oral contraceptive pills, weight reduction, and exercise. Try to take the tablet Metformin 500 mg thrice a day.

I hope you find this helpful.

Thank you.
