This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have blood dots present under my skin. But it appears only in my arms. I have them on a different arm every morning. I do not have itching, and they are not raised.

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through the attachment (attachment removed to protect patient identity). These are called petechiae. It can occur due to multiple causes. Please mention about the other clinical complaints you have. Please say about the recurrence of these blood dots and your drug history. Please report about the recent history of trauma.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, they are recurrent, and I was taking penicillin before getting this problem. I never had a fever, and I do not have any recent trauma. Usually, when I wake up, I would have them on a different arm. I do not have itching. I have some blood dots present on my stomach.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It can occur secondary to penicillin intake. But there is no need to worry unless it happens with fever. Check your complete blood count with platelet, clotting time and bleeding time soon.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

I do not have a fever or anything. I have the dots alone.

What can it be if I had a fever?

What does the blood count determine?

Please guide.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

We need to find the underlying cause, but sometimes it can occur due to minor trauma or secondary bacterial infection. In case of a fever, we need to rule out a viral fever. In your case, it can occur due to the use of penicillin. It can subside once you stop the drug. Coming to blood tests, it helps to rule out the other causes of petechiae, like low platelet count and bleeding disorders.

Thank you.
