Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been diagnosed with prediabetes and have a habit of smoking cigarettes. Can you explain the influence of smoking or tobacco usage on the progression from pre diabetes to type 2 diabetes? Are there any particular guidelines or resources available to assist people to manage prediabetes and quit smoking to avoid developing type 2 diabetes?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

There is a correlation between diabetes and smoking. Smoking can enhance a person's chance of acquiring type 2 diabetes in a variety of ways. Cigarette chemicals injure your body's cells and can interfere with their regular function. This can create inflammation throughout the body, which can reduce the efficacy of insulin. Furthermore, when chemicals from cigarette smoke interact with oxygen in the body, this process, known as oxidative stress, might trigger cell damage. The risk of diabetes may be linked to both oxidative damage and inflammation. Individuals who smoke are between 30 and 40 %more likely to acquire type 2 diabetes than nonsmokers.

I hope this helps. Thank you.
