Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had vaginal sex with my boyfriend two days back. I have taken the pill for seven months now and never missed a pill. But I forgot to take the pill yesterday. So I took both yesterday's and today's pill this morning. Will I become pregnant?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

I do not see any reason for you to worry. Let me explain. These contraceptive pills are a constant dose of Estrogen and Progesterone taken daily. When taken so, they suppress the hormones from the ovary that in turn suppresses the hormones stimulating the follicle stimulating hormones (FSH) from the brain. When the follicles are so suppressed the eggs do not grow and so you do not ovulate. To keep them so suppressed, they need to get the daily suppressive dose of hormones. If you forget to give these follicles the daily dose of hormones for more than 48 hours, that is two days, the suppressive effect will be gone and the follicle starts to grow. To grow up to the size of ovulation it takes seven to ten days, but this is not possible within one or two days. But you have taken the pill the next day and that too double dose. So there is no way the follicle would have escaped the hormonal suppression. So I can confidently say that there is no chance of pregnancy.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.
