Can frequent urination be caused by an enlarged prostate?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a problem with frequent urination, and I am diabetic. Please check the attached reports and provide your valuable advice or opinion.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The ultrasound report (attachments removed to protect the patient’s identity) shows an enlarged prostate. Your urinary symptoms are due to the enlarged prostate. The pre-void volume is 300 mL, and the post-void volume is 230 mL, which is higher than normal. Additionally, the left kidney is small and might be non-functioning due to diabetes. You should undergo uroflowmetry tests and a DTPA (Diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid,) scan to assess the status of the left kidney.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

The doctor says that my urethra is narrow, which is why the flow is not proper. They have recommended surgery.

Please advise.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, the urethra can be narrow, but this can not be determined from an ultrasound report. Did you undergo tests such as uroflowmetry or retrograde urethrography to check for urethral narrowing? If the urethra is narrowed, then surgery is necessary. If the urethra is normal, surgery for the prostate may still be required, depending on the uroflowmetry report.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I have attached the uroflowmetry report.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I saw the attached report (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity). The flow is very poor, which suggests possible narrowing of the urethra. You may require surgery. If urethral narrowing is present, it should be treated. If no narrowing is found, then treatment for the prostate will be necessary.

Thank you.
