Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My 72-year-old grandfather got diagnosed with vocal cord cancer. He has had bypass surgery in the past. He stopped smoking almost seven years back. He was asked to do 33 days of radiation therapy. I have attached all the details. His current medications include statin and Aspirin. Now he has only three more days to go. Now he has lost his voice by almost 90 %. He finds it very difficult to speak. His neck has gotten dark and sensitive. He has become really weak. He seems constipated most of the time and does not pass stool well, making him more uncomfortable. Since yesterday his neck has been itching, and pricking him with some irritation has been created in the area. How do I manage this? I need your advice. And can this type of cancer be fully cured? It is what the doctor has been saying, but I need a second opinion. Is there something I need to worry about?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

All these symptoms are side effects of radiation therapy.

After completing radiation, all his symptoms will start improving. Usually, it takes four to six weeks.

Some symptoms, like voice, might not recover fully, but it is a life-saving treatment. So radiation was a must to save his life in the first place.

He can take laxatives for constipation (consult a specialist doctor, talk with him or her and take medicines with their consent).

There is always a chance of recurrence, but not for everyone.

We should hope for the best.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
