Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 26-year-old female. I am writing to seek your guidance and expertise regarding my lifestyle habits and their potential impact on my health. Over the past few years, I have noticed that I have become increasingly sedentary. My daily routine mainly consists of sitting at a desk for long hours due to work commitments, followed by evenings spent watching television or engaging in other sedentary activities. What are the health risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle, and how might it affect my overall well-being? Could you provide recommendations for incorporating more physical activity into my daily routine, considering my work and personal commitments? Are there any dietary changes or nutritional considerations that could help mitigate the potential negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. A sedentary lifestyle is harmful to cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health. The heart becomes deconditioned and the lungs too. Functional capacity decreases which leads to fatigue and shortness of breath on mild exertion. Daily moderate-intensity aerobic exercise is necessary to keep the heart and lungs conditioned.

Daily 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise is recommended by AHA (American Heart Association) and ESC (European Society of Cardiology). You can do this by taking 15-15 minute breaks and jogging on a treadmill or on the road or ground, or playing football, swimming, cycling, etc. Diet is another issue, avoid fatty foods, and take a Mediterranean diet which includes fruits, veggies, nuts, low-fat dairy products, and fiber.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Regards.
