What causes a strange discomfort in the tooth without pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My tooth feels strange. It does not hurt, but there is a sensation that is making me worried. I am currently in another country and do not have dental insurance, as it is not common here. I am unsure what to do and need assistance. I think the issue has been developing slowly, but I only noticed it last night.

The sensation seems to originate at the base of the tooth rather than the top. I previously chipped that tooth during a boxing sparring session and shattered another tooth further back, but this feels very different.

Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Upon review, the following findings were discovered, it might be related to a chipped anterior tooth, tooth sensitivity, or any deposited plaque, stains, or calculus.

If the strange feeling is caused by lower mandibular anterior teeth sensitivity or chipping, the sensitivity may arise when a chipped tooth comes in contact with cold foods or liquids. It is because it is induced by the spillage into the exposed dentinal tubules of the teeth, causing sensitivity. This could be reduced by using an anti-sensitivity toothpaste which decreases the sensitivity by blocking these tubes with ions. Here are my suggestions:

  1. For around 15 days, use any sensitivity toothpaste (for tooth sensitivity).
  2. In case of any deposits scaling and oral care is recommended.
  3. A composite filling, also called a white filling, can be used to restore the chipped-off part of chipped-off teeth.
  4. There is a possibility that it may occur because of an abscess on the periapical surface or periodontal involvement.

Hope I have clarified your query. I will be happy to help you further.

Thank you.
