Can anxiety and stress cause shaky hands and feet?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Two months before, I had surgery done to remove tissues from my chest, and for three to four weeks, I was not feeling good. When I lift a glass of water or something from the ground, my hands and legs shake. But when I am at rest, I am fine, and occasionally I get muscle spasms. Also, I have noticed a ringing sound in my ears but not disturbing. The doctor said I could do exercise, but I felt shaky after exercise.

I took Klonopin for two to three days a week for about a year before my surgery, but I discontinued it before the surgery. Is this because of Benzo's withdrawal? I suffer from anxiety, and I think this is because of stress or anxiety.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Shakiness and unsteadiness can happen in an anxiety state, which may be associated with more anxiety symptoms like palpitations, a feeling of impending doom or fearfulness, and sleep disturbance. It does not seem to be a Benzodiazepine withdrawal effect because you have taken it infrequently. Possibly previously, your anxiety symptoms have been masked by Benzodiazepine, but now it is reappearing. I suggest consulting a psychiatrist for a detailed evaluation.

Also, need to rule out thyroid disturbance.

Thank you.

Investigations to be done

Check T3 (Triiodothyronine), T4 (Thyroxine), and TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone).

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply. I have noticed that shakiness tends to worsen when I drink coffee. Are you suggesting that my shakiness is due to anxiety or hyperthyroidism?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

As per your description and history, the possibility of anxiety can be hyperthyroidism. It can be ruled out by a simple blood examination.

Thank you.
