What could be the reason for delayed periods other than pregnancy?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My friend took I-pill after two days of having unprotected sex. It has been a month since she had periods. She did the pregnancy test which came out negative.

Now she is having cramps and pain in her pelvic area.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Sometimes periods might get delayed by one or two weeks because contraceptive pills cause hormonal changes. Females can have cramps and pain before the menstrual cycle. So wait for one more week. If periods would not come then do a urine pregnancy test again. All contraceptives are not 100 % sure there is some failure rate and sometimes early pregnancy kits might show false negative results.

For pain, she can take a tablet Meftal-Spas (Mefenamic acid). She should consult with her doctor and take the medicine with their consent.

Thank you.
