A urine pregnancy test detects the human chorionic gonadotropin hormone (hCG) in the urine. This hormone is produced by the cells in the placenta during pregnancy. Home kits to perform urine pregnancy tests are commercially available. It is best to wait for 1 to 2 weeks after missing your periods before taking a home urine pregnancy test.
