Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 56 years old and have had IgA (Immunoglobulin A) nephropathy (Berger disease) for the past seven years. It is being treated with Cardace 10 mg, Minipress XL 5 mg, Lipitor 10 mg, and fish oil capsules. I had an ultrasound six years back, which showed a solitary small nodule in my right thyroid lobe at 9 x 6 mm. The left lobe was normal. Two months later, I had a thyroid test: TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) 0.442 uIU/ml, Free T3 (free triiodothyronine) 2.65 pg/ml, Free T4 (thyroxine) 1.09 ng/dl. In addition, I have a grade 1 benign prostrate and am not under medication. My platelet count has been historically low varying from 128,000 to 150,000 cells/mcL. When tested with thyroid, it shows a platelet count of 122,000 cells/mcL. Last week, I had a sore throat and stuffy nose and was treated with Dolo 650, Ecoflox, and Protopan for two days. The course of medication was over yesterday. I had difficulty sleeping, and it took longer to fall into a deep sleep, and even then, I was conscious that I was asleep for the last two days. I was interrupted once or twice during my sleep. What are the signs of hyperthyroidism or possibly side effect of cold medication? Can thyroid function deteriorate rapidly after my last test? Is sleep disorder a sign of hyperthyroidism? When can I get my thyroid levels rechecked? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query, and I can understand your concern.

I have reviewed your reports (attachment removed to protect the patient’s identity). They show that you are euthyroid, which means your thyroid is normal, and you need not have to worry. I would suggest you repeat the thyroid profile after two months. Make sure you do the tests on an empty stomach.

I hope this helps you. Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply,

I have some stress at home. This is mainly because I had to cancel my travel plans due to my recent cold and throat infection. My concern was it happened suddenly two days ago, and I was also concerned if it was due to thyroid or if it was temporary due to possibly the effects of the cold medication.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I have read your query, and I can understand your concern.

Cold medicines can sometimes cause insomnia or loss of sleep. What was the name of the cold medications that you took? Be assured that the thyroid is not responsible for your loss of sleep.

I hope this information will help you. Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

Last week, I had a sore throat and stuffy nose and was treated with Dolo 650, Ecoflox 400 mg, and Protopan. I took one tablet each three times a day for two days. I also took a Remycin tablet once a day for ten days. The cold medication got over yesterday, but Remycin continues for another five days. I noticed over the last two days that I had difficulty sleeping. My thyroid results were normal in the earlier test. Can the T3 and T4, and TSH deteriorate suddenly? Does it take time to get over the range if there is a thyroid problem? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I have read your query, and I can understand your concern.

I reiterate that since TSH and T4 are normal, they are not the cause of your sleep disturbance. And also thyroid does not deteriorate in a matter of days. It usually takes months or years before symptoms manifest.

I hope this information helps you. Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

You did not respond to my query regarding whether cold medication could affect sleep patterns. Does any of the above medications cause sleep pattern issues? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I have read your query, and I can understand your concern.

Cold medications usually make you more sleepy. Any medications taken will not disturb your sleep pattern within a couple of days. I feel you are worrying about something that causes you to lose sleep.

I hope this information will help you. Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
