Why do I have some weird urge to move my legs at night?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 20 years old and struggling with my health right now. I went to the doctor, and he asked me to get certain tests. I have been vomiting for four months, but most of the time while travelling in the metro. Though I have been traveling through the metro for many years, I have never faced such a problem.

The fluid that I throw up is clear like water. Two weeks ago, I had mild abdominal pain, which roughly lasted for three days. I have lost my appetite, and it is resulting in weight loss. I feel weak and tired most of the time. My hands and legs sometimes get really cold due to a headache or abdominal pain.

  1. What could I be suffering from?
  2. What am I dealing with?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It would be helpful to know where exactly your abdominal pain is located. If you upload a picture while pointing towards it, it will be very helpful.

  1. Do you vomit each time you have abdominal pain, or can they happen at two separate times, as well?
  2. Do you have black stools or blood in the stools?
  3. Is there a complaint of diarrhea?
  4. Are there chances of pregnancy?
  5. Do you remember how bad your hemoglobin was?
  6. Do you have issues with passing urine, such as burning, too much urination, a very bad smell, cloudiness, etc.?
  7. Do you suffer from fever or chills?
  8. Is there any regular medication, painkiller use, or alcohol intake?

Please answer the above to the best of your knowledge, as I want to help you better.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

Abdominal pain has happened just once, like I said, two weeks ago. It was near the lower abdomen. Vomiting usually occurs while I am traveling on the metro. I have seen blood in my stools once or twice in the last five months. Indigestion is a frequent problem, though. There is no problem with urination. There is no chance of being pregnant.

I have never consumed alcohol and do not use painkillers. Weakness and tiredness are continuous problems. I feel dizzy sometimes. I have trouble getting to sleep at night. I also have some weird urge to move my legs. They keep on getting restless whenever I try to rest.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Thank you for the detailed answers.

You are suffering from restless legs syndrome (RLS) at night. It is a well-known phenomenon associated with iron deficiency anemia.

Now the question is, are you having iron deficiency anemia?

It can also be the cause of weakness and dizziness.

Do the tests:

  1. Iron profile.
  2. CBC (complete blood count, if not done in the last three months).
  3. Vitamin B12 and vitamin D.
  4. Anti-endomysial antibodies.
  5. Ultrasound pelvis (if heavy periods are present).

Take ferrous sulfate 325 mg three times a day, vitamin B12 500 mg daily, vitamin D 2000 IU once daily, and Omeprazole 20 mg one pill twice daily (30 minutes before the meal).

I hope it helps.

Thank you.
