When I eat a certain food, it feels stuck in my throat. Is this normal?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had a tonsillectomy and uvulectomy three months ago. I still have no taste and little smell. I often have a metallic taste in my mouth. When I eat a certain foods, it feels stuck in my throat. Is this normal? I have fallen into a deep depression. I got the surgery because my tonsils have always been enlarged. Also, I was diagnosed with extreme sleep apnea about seven years ago. Currently, I am taking medication for hypertension and depression. Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. Taste disturbance (dysgeusia) or decreased taste sensation after tonsillectomy is a rare complication. But nothing to be worried about. It will recover after some time. You can try Zinc supplements for a faster recovery. As far as the other symptom of feeling something stuck in the throat is concerned, it would be best if you could share a picture of the tonsillar beds. But there is no need to feel depressed because of this. This can happen to anyone, and you will recover with proper management. Than you.
