Patient's Query

Hello,

I had protected intercourse with my partner 10 days before my period. My period should start this week. I have noticed spotting. I am concerned that I will still get pregnant.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I read your query and understand your concern.

Pregnancy can only occur if precum (pre-ejaculate) or if semen is released inside the vagina.

You can carry out urine for a pregnancy test (UPT) from the first day of a missed period. If you do not know when your next period is due, then do the test at least 10 days after you had unprotected sex.

Sometimes menstrual cycle can be delayed.

A delay of up to 1 week (7 to 10 days) is considered normal if it happens once or twice in a year and if there is no underlying disease.

Causes of delayed menstrual cycles include pregnancy, stress, sudden weight loss, being overweight, doing too much exercise, contraceptive pills, endometriosis, and hormonal imbalance during sexual activity.

If the menstrual cycle is delayed for more than 10 days, then go for a urine pregnancy test. If it tests negative, then go for a beta HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) test.

Kindly consult a specialist, talk to them, and take medications with their consent.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.
