Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My period's date was due on the second day of this month. I had intercourse with protection on the last day of the previous month but the condom bursted during the intercourse. I had taken an emergency contraceptive pill within half an hour. My periods are already delayed, it has been a week and now I am having thin blood spotting.
What is your advice regarding the pregnancy test and the precautions?
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern and I will surely help you.
For getting pregnant, the sperms have to fertilize with an egg and then the fertilized egg should be implanted in the uterus of the female.
In your case, although the condom bursted and since you were near your periods, short just by two days so, ideally you were out of your fertility window so the egg should not have been present there. Nevertheless, you took the emergency contraceptive pill which is indeed a good thing to stay protected against even a rare possibility of pregnancy.
Now the thing is that the emergency contraceptive pills are hormone-based and they have the effect of delaying periods in certain females so you can expect your period to be delayed upto two weeks. Also, share with me your history of irregular periods and ovulation, if you have any. This will help me to assess your situation better.
Regarding the pregnancy test, I would like to tell you that possibility of pregnancy is really low and the delay in period can be attributed to an emergency contraceptive pill. In case you want to have a fairly accurate pregnancy test then the pregnancy test can only be done after around 12- 14 days. You may consider doing a urine pregnancy test at home around the same time.
The thin blood spotting can be withdrawal bleeding in your case. You had the intercourse and the condom bursted during your fertility window, it could have been implantation bleeding but based on the details presented by you, it is most likely withdrawal bleeding which is again a side effect of an emergency contraceptive pill.
Feel free to ask any questions and please share the requested details for better assessment. It will enable me to help you better.
