Can maternal stress affect the well-being of the fetus?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

When I was less than 11 weeks pregnant, I had some acute stress. I felt my uterus contracted, and I was really in a state of “fight or flight.” I was feeling my stomach shrank and quite dizzy. It happened for like 15 to 20 minutes. Now I am worried that I made my baby hypoxic for that time. I also heard that the placenta takes over 10 to 12 weeks, so I assume he was getting his oxygen from me. I am worried right now. Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

It is well-known that maternal stress can affect the wellbeing of the fetus. But if you do not have a continuous contraction or frequent contraction during the day or any bleeding, you need not worry about it. There are a lot of mechanisms that protect the baby. For you to be quite relieved, I would recommend an ultrasound as you have to perform the first-trimester ultrasound as well.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

I had no further contractions or bleeding, and I have my 12 weeks screening appointment in one and a half week. Should I book one more appointment to make sure everything is fine or wait until then?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Again, it is not necessary for a sooner appointment, as you have not any symptoms now. Wait for the time of your booked appointment.

I wish you a healthy pregnancy.
