Is it abnormal if the sutures remove spontaneously from the extraction site and food gets lodged there?
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My wisdom tooth was extracted four days ago, and the stitches came off yesterday. Should I be concerned if the stitches of my extracted wisdom tooth came off and food goes deep inside the extracted site?
Please give me your suggestion.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Healing after tooth extraction takes three to five days. However, complete closure of the socket takes a couple of weeks. Stitches coming off are not a problem if you do not have any pain or discomfort.
But avoid eating hard and chewy foods for the next two days to be safer. And rinse your mouth after every meal to remove food deposits from the socket. Food lodgement into the socket could lead to delayed healing and infection. Also, I suggest you to do warm saline mouth rinses twice daily, which will promote healing.
I hope this helps you. Kindly follow up if you have any doubts.
Thank you.
