Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I have been taking Inderal 40 mg twice daily for more than two years for anxiety. How to stop it?
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your query.
Inderal 40 is a beta-blocker called Propranolol. It is used to relieve anxiety. It acts by reducing heart rate and other actions on the sympathetic nervous system. Since you are taking 80 mg daily and are doing well, may I know why you want to stop it? The problem with sudden stoppage is rebound symptoms like palpitation, etc. Please answer these for a better understanding of your issue:
1. Is there any history of asthma in you or your family?
2. Have you checked your thyroid status?
Hyperthyroidism can cause anxiety symptoms. I will suggest stopping the medications based on your response.
Revert with answers.
Regards.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thank you for your reply.
There is no history of asthma, and I used to have hyperthyroidism drugs, but now it is normal. I want to stop because it is hard to adjust to dose timing. I use it at 11 AM and PM. Last night, I missed a dose and took it at 4 AM. When can I take the next dose?
Hi,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
Since you had hyperthyroidism, I think Inderal was prescribed to you. I think you can take the tablets at 9 AM and 9 PM. In this way, you will not skip the dose. I would suggest you should continue the tablets, as stopping the medicines can bring out palpitations and tremors. Please answer these for a better understanding:
1. What treatment did you take for hyperthyroidism?
2. When was the last time you checked your free T4 (thyroxine), and what was the value?

Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thank you for your reply.
For hyperthyroidism, I took Neo-Mercazole 5 mg once a day. The last test was four months back, and T4 was around 106 ng/dL. Can I take Inderal at 11 AM again?
Hi,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Then it would help if you continued Neomercazole (Carbimazole) 5 mg daily. Please do not stop it without a doctor's advice. Do not take the next dose at 11 AM. You can take the next dose at 9 PM and then continue it with 9 AM and 9 PM. You can think of stopping Inderal only if you undergo thyroid ablation and do not require Inderal to maintain normal thyroid function. However, you can ask your doctor to reduce the dosage of Inderal, which he may consider, taking into consideration your symptoms and heart rate.
Hope this helps.
Regards.
