What is the treatment for jaw pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Since yesterday, I have been unable to open my mouth widely. I have a restricted opening. When I try to open my mouth widely, I have pain in the right side of the jaw. I consulted a doctor yesterday. He gave me an injection and suggested me to take some tablets. In the early morning, I tried to open my mouth again and I was able to open my mouth successfully on two tries. After that, my jaw became locked again. Why does this happen? Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Kindly answer the following queries-

  • Do you have a previous history of dental treatments like fillings, tooth removal, or root canal treatment?
  • Do you have a habit of chewing tobacco and smoking?
  • Do you have any associated tooth pain?
  • Did you have any recent fall injuries?

Lockjaw can occur due to various factors, such as tensed jaw muscles, wisdom tooth issues, and jaw joint issues, or it can occur due to OSMF (oral submucous fibrosis- a chronic, progressive, precancerous condition caused by long-term pan chewing habits). This condition is treated by taking painkillers and muscle relaxants. Continue taking tablets for a few days.

Usually, it takes about one or two weeks for this condition to come back to normal. However, clinical examination is necessary to diagnose your condition and to provide proper treatment. Do not open your mouth forcefully because it can restrict your mouth opening again and can delay your recovery. Continue taking medications and consult your doctor for review. Practice mouth opening exercise as instructed.

I wish you good health.

Thank you.
