Are painless bumps on the tongue an indication of cancer?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a small painless pink bump on the left side of my tongue for the past six weeks. I am taking tablets for high blood pressure, acid reflux, cholesterol, over-the-counter allergy tablets, and Theo-24 for asthma. I had done blood test two weeks ago and the results were normal. What could be the reason for the pink bump?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I had gone through the photographs (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity). You have bilateral nodules on both sides of the tongue. They are of normal color and could be due to traumatic cheek bites or food burns.

They are not cancerous. But I suggest getting selective grinding on both sides so that they do not progress. If the occlusion is fine, there is no need for selective grinding. Similarly, a bump at the lowermost portion is also normal, but its position could be suspicious. There are no signs of any abnormalities now, but we must be cautious. I suggest observing for three to four weeks and seeing any changes in color and size.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply. But there is no bump on the other side of my tongue.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

On the left side, the bump is much prominent, but if you see on the right side, there are some irregular borders. On the right side, it is just nodular, wherein on the left side, it is extra prominent.
