Why is there a stabbing pain in the left side of the throat after tonsillectomy?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I underwent a tonsillectomy two months back. My tonsils are healing well, but throughout my recovery, my left side hurt a lot more than the right. On a scale of 1to 10, I would rate the pain on my left as between six to eight, while the pain on my right was between two to three. It hurts so badly that I find it difficult to swallow. On day 10 of my post-operative recovery period, I could eat solid food very easily. Please note that on day one, I had the feeling that the food was stuck in my throat. However, from day eight, I noticed that there were shooting, stabbing pains on my left side which radiates to my ears. I do not know the reason for this, because the pain is not at the site where the scabs are forming (it is further down the end of my tongue as far as I can see). I cannot tell if it is my tongue that hurts or the part where the tonsil was removed (it does not hurt at the depression where my left tonsil used to be). I am puzzled by this. It feels as though some piece of food is constantly stuck in my throat area. The right side does not hurt, but I have the feeling that something is stuck on the right side too (but not as obvious as the left). The left side hurts especially when I eat or drink. There are also random pain spikes when I am not eating and it suddenly starts to hurt. I took the tablet Augmentin. What could be the cause? Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

We will guide you with your health-related queries. Post-tonsillectomy pain can be expected to persist for a week but in your case, it persisted till day 10 of your post-operative recovery period. I would like to know what medications you are taking currently. Did you gargle properly? At times, due to a lot of sloughs (post-tonsillectomy), patients can feel the pain. If you have the presence of a foreign body sensation deep down your throat, then it can be due to some injury like post-intubation during surgery. I suggest you gargle using hydrogen peroxide properly for a few more days (at least four days) and take some anti-inflammatory medications and a painkiller. Take a soft diet. If your symptoms do not subside, then meet an ENT (ear-nose-throat) specialist personally. I appreciate your trust in icliniq. Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
