Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

For the past few years, I have been having the following symptoms:

1) Tremors.

2) Pain near the spinal cord.

3) Head stiffness.

4) Getting stuck when thinking or solving things.

Please advise.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I would like to know the following details:

1) May I know your age?

2) Do you have any history of hypertension or diabetes?

3) Do you have any history of previous tuberculosis?

I will suggest an immediate MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the brain to rule out degenerative diseases.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the quick reply. I am 25 years old. No one in my family has diabetes. Yes, I do have slight hypertension as much tension or worries are there in my mind. I did not have any tuberculosis. But I had jaundice in my childhood.

A quick background of what happened to me:

1. Before 14 years, I noticed tremors in my hands.

2. Before 12 years, I fell unconscious and had some sensation near the spinal cord or neck for a fraction of a second, and I fell.

3. Before 10-12 years, I had tremors in most of the parts of my body.

4. Before 8-10 years, I had depression.

I always have recurring muscle spasms and breaking sounds in my neck/spinal cord, even when I breathe. I can hear the sound as something is being pulled and made straight along with slight pain. My speech was affected. I had difficulty with numbers and a lot of confusion in my career. I also notice that I misplace things and yell at someone (on rare occasions). I have heaviness in the head when I get up in the morning. I also have an acidity problem and hemorrhoids (piles) and am under homeopathy medication. However, the worst symptom is getting stuck when I am thinking or solving assignments as I feel something is being pressed on either side of my forehead, and at the same time, I can sense some nerve inside my head is being pulled from the spinal cord. So, I will have a headache and not do the work, and I will go off to bed. Due to the above problems, many decisions have been delayed in my life in terms of my career, studies, etc. But people do report that I have become slow.

I did complete blood checkups, CT scan-brain, ECG, EEG, Cerebro-copper content test, thyroid test, vitamin B12, and every test report came as 'normal.' But they could not give me a proper solution. I did consult neurologists or neuropsychiatrists in famous hospitals. They gave tablet Inderal 10 mg daily.

I am trying hard to focus on my studies, career, life activities effectively, but I do not see any results due to the above symptoms. Hence, I kindly request your valuable opinion as it has taken three years of my life.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Thank you for the follow-up.

Since you were absolutely normal and sharp before, which has been a recent development over the past few years, it points to autoimmune pathology. Infectious causes can be completely ruled out since it has persisted over the years. If there were any tubercular granulomas in the brain, they would have been picked up by the CT (computed tomography) scan. Such granulomas can often lead to similar symptoms. Other possibilities of any evident bleeding in the brain can also be ruled out because of a normal CT scan.

Now I feel you should get an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the brain to rule out Huntington's disease. It affects the body's coordination and is mainly seen in young adults. It gradually affects speech, leads to memory disturbances, mood disturbances, etc. It is slightly challenging to establish the diagnosis because it needs careful physical evaluation and an MRI scan.

I know you have been having a hard time, and it is prudent to keep trying to find out what is wrong with you. But I suspect an autoimmune involvement like Huntington's disease, and hence MRI scan will be the best choice. Please follow up with us after MRI and do share the reports.

I will try my best to help you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
