Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had unprotected vaginal sex. How effective is PEP when initiated 22 hours after one-time unprotected vaginal intercourse? Is an RNA test affected by PEP? Is it considered effective during treatment? Also, I am experiencing a sore throat and fatigue, causing concern. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

PEP stands for post-exposure prophylaxis and is over 90 percent effective when used correctly for 28 days with no additional exposure. While a negative HIV RNA (human immunodeficiency virus ribonucleic acid test) provides some assurance, I suggest undergoing serology (antibody) testing. The first test should be done two weeks after completing PEP, followed by another at three months after the last exposure. No particular symptoms or signs can definitively diagnose human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

So, to summarize, if the fourth generation RNA test is negative after 10 days, even when on PEP, it provides encouraging results but is not yet conclusive.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I suggest that you undergo an initial fourth-generation HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) rapid test at six weeks (two weeks after finishing post-exposure prophylaxis). If the result is negative, you should follow up with a confirmatory HIV antibody test three months after your last unprotected exposure.

I hope this helps.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

I have developed a sore inside my nose. Is this something to worry about? Also, I am experiencing severe anxiety.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

This might be folliculitis, a common skin condition characterized by the inflammation and infection of hair follicles.

I hope this helps.
