Why is there a delay in periods after taking ECPs?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had unprotected sex with my fiance. After sex, within 48 hours, I took two ECP tablets. After taking it, bleeding started for two days. My menstrual date was a week back but I did not get it. Also, I face some kind of a different taste in my throat, have a headache and troubled heart. In every month I take one dose of ECP and every time when I take ECP, bleeding start for two days and I successfully get my periods. But now after sex, I took ECP and the same bleeding started for two days but I did not get my periods. Is this any sign of pregnancy or any infection or whatever?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your periods can become irregular after taking ECP (emergency contraceptive pill). It may be early or delayed by one week. You may also have spotting. You have taken medicine correctly. The urine test will not pick up early pregnancy. Please do serum Beta hCG blood test now to rule out pregnancy confirmatively. I would like you to start on monthly contraceptive pills, to avoid such situations in the future.
