How can we manage overactive bladder?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I do not have a UTI. A test was done to check my kidney function and diabetes. I have the urge to urinate for the past one month. I urinate more in the morning, and it gets decreased during the day and at night time. I have muscle aches on the thighs, arms, and back. I have bloating and constipation for the past two months. I am taking Culturelle and Metamucil.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through the attachment (attachment removed to protect patient identity). If your tests have ruled out urinary infection, you may have an overactive bladder. Take a moderate amount of fluids throughout the day. Do not take a large amount of liquid at a time. Avoid taking tea, coffee, alcohol, and soft drinks if possible. Try holding your urine for five minutes longer than usual, and increase to 10 and then 15 minutes every week. For example, if you go for every 15 minutes, now try holding for 20 minutes. You can start a beta-adrenergic called Mirabegron if your doctor advises. Try to reduce weight. Avoiding constipation will help.
