Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My period was one and a half months ago. I tested that day, and it was mild positive. The next day I tried again and got a solid dark line positive. Every test that I have taken after that has been mild positives. I am also having on and off brown spotting. Why are my positive lines getting lighter?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Do not worry. The lines in the pregnancy test indicate the presence of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin- pregnancy hormone)in your urine. Therefore the higher the level of hCG, the darker the color of the lines. Also, hCG tends to increase from the fourth week to the eighth week, and the levels remain until week 12. The cause of the lighter positive lines could be the following,

  1. The first dark line was a false positive.
  2. The pregnancy can be in the tubes.
  3. If the embryo stops growing (developmental arrest).
  4. If the pregnancy is going for abortion.
  5. If the cause of increased hCG is other causes (like a tumor- worst scenario).

These are the following steps you can take,

  1. You can do an abdominal and transvaginal scan to see the size and site of the pregnancy.
  2. You can check the blood level of hCG.

These reports can give us a clue to the following line of action.

I hope this was helpful. Regards.
